A development editor oversees the publication design and content development on a daily operational level, and evaluates readiness for publication.

Development editors work with authors and colleagues to develop a blend of print and electronic materials from early drafts through to the ready-to-edit stage, delivering to agreed specification, schedule, and budget. From liaising with authors, advisers and reviewers to ensuring the accuracy and market suitability of new products, development editors add the extra ingredients that ensure the publication works well in the market.

In the case of online publishing, a development editor's principal responsibilities require him/her to: assist stakeholders in building effective and strategic websites, enhancing the look, content, and user-orientations that the Internet demands, and editing their proposed web material to ensure greatest user satisfaction; work closely with the marketing heads primarily to use the web for building personalized, integrated, and strategic relationships between the client and external constituents. Developmental editors are also required to support recruitment; maintain a consistent image/identity representation for the client; advance the greater strategic initiatives of the company; and work closely with computing and media services staff, particularly the web system administrator.
